Adventure Rides

What to Expect

These are adventure rides, not races, but expect a “pushing it” atmosphere. Not designed to focus on “winning” but instead celebrate cycling camaraderie, high performance, personal challenge, perseverance, self sufficiency, and endurance.

Routes are created out of an appreciation and love for adventure. We’ve spent hours studying maps and route possibilities for ways to stage riders across the one of the most remote and sparsely populated part of the state.

What to Expect

In the last several years, new bicycle events have popped up in Trinidad-Las Animas County. Each of these events are run by separate organizations. Registration is handled by that event organizer. Backshop Bikes is managing the seven adventure day Explore Las Animas Dirt Series.

Santa Fe Trail Scenic Byway

Colorado's Santa Fe Trail follows the path of caravans of traders. Ride through existing historic sites, including trading posts, stage stops, graves, and ruins. Discover an undisturbed, pristine landscape while observing a diversity of wildlife habitats. Numerous archaeological sites, including pictographs, petroglyphs, Native American teepee rings, fire circles, and dinosaur tracks can be found throughout the region.

Highway of Legends Scenic Byway

A series of county roads form bikeway routes that connect several southern Colorado towns and areas steeped in frontier legend and folklore. Within this network of bike routes you’ll go through former mining towns, including the historic Ludlow Massacre site, and awe at the beauty of the Spanish Peaks. Cycling through this region is a step into past of Colorado’s long and colorful history.

Trinidad-Las Animas County is a gravel bike destination in the making. We’re located three hours, 190 miles, south of Denver, on I-25. Trinidad is an ideal starting point to explore the remote backcountry of southeast Colorado.
